Even very small optical losses can become significant in a high-power laser system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is therefore no universal laser optic that works for every laser system. The exact configuration varies between laser systems, but a simplified optical chain can be described as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Laser source \u2192 beam delivery \u2192 collimation \u2192 beam steering \u2192 focusing \u2192 process<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fibre laser systems, the laser beam is often transmitted from the laser source through an optical fibre to a processing head. The beam is then collimated before being focused onto the workpiece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other systems, the beam may be transmitted through free space using mirrors and other optical components. This is common, for example, in traditional CO\u2082 laser systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regardless of the configuration, the objective is the same: the laser energy must reach the process with the correct beam diameter, focus, power density and beam quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From a Collimated Beam to the Focal Point<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Focusing is one of the most important functions of laser optics. A collimated laser beam passes through a focusing lens or equivalent optical system and is concentrated into a much smaller area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the same laser power is concentrated onto a smaller area, the power density increases significantly. This is what makes it possible to melt, vaporise, cut, weld, mark or ablate materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focal length of the focusing optics influences factors including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>focal spot size<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>working distance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>power density<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>focusing angle<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the region around the focus where the beam retains useful properties.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A shorter focal length can generally produce a smaller focal spot, but also results in a shorter working distance and less tolerance for variations in the position of the workpiece. A longer focal length provides different characteristics and may be more suitable where a greater working distance is required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Selecting the correct focusing optics therefore always involves balancing the different requirements of the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beam Quality, BPP and M\u00b2<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The quality of the laser beam influences how effectively it can be focused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two laser beams with the same power cannot necessarily be focused to the same spot size. Beam quality can be described using parameters such as <strong>Beam Parameter Product (BPP)<\/strong> and <strong>M\u00b2<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A laser beam with good beam quality can generally be focused to a smaller spot or maintain a small beam diameter over a longer distance than a beam with poorer beam quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Optics cannot improve the fundamental beam quality delivered by the laser source. However, incorrectly specified, damaged or contaminated optics can degrade the properties of the beam and consequently affect the process result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The laser source, beam quality and optics must therefore be considered as parts of the same optical system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Different Laser Types Place Different Demands on the Optics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Industrial laser systems operate across a wide range of wavelengths and with very different power levels and pulse regimes. Optics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Focusing lenses concentrate the laser beam to the spot size and power density required by the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Focal length, beam diameter, beam quality and optical design together determine how the laser beam is focused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Focusing optics are used in virtually all types of industrial laser processing, including laser cutting, laser welding, laser marking, laser cleaning and micromachining.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div Optics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Collimating optics are used to convert a diverging laser beam into a substantially parallel beam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In many fibre laser systems, the laser beam exits the process fibre and then passes through collimating optics before continuing to the focusing optics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The relationship between the focal lengths of the collimating and focusing optics influences, among other things, beam magnification and the characteristics of the final focal and the processing application. At low power levels, very small absorption may have limited significance, but at high laser powers even small optical losses become important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of the reasons why material, coating, surface quality and cleanliness become increasingly critical as laser power increases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Optical Materials and Coatings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Optical Materials<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The material must be capable of transmitting or reflecting the relevant laser wavelength while also meeting the required thermal and mechanical properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on wavelength and application, various optical glasses, fused silica and specialised IR materials are used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For CO\u2082 lasers operating at around 10.6 \u00b5m, <strong>zinc selenide (ZnSe)<\/strong> is a common material for transmissive optics because many conventional optical glasses do not transmit this long-wave infrared radiation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The choice of optical material is therefore directly related to the wavelength of the laser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Coatings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The coating is an integral part of laser optics and may consist of extremely thin layers designed to provide specific optical properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Anti-reflection coatings (AR)<\/strong> are used on transmissive optics to reduce unwanted reflections and increase transmission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>High-reflectivity coatings (HR)<\/strong> are used on mirrors to provide very high reflectivity at the intended wavelength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coatings can also be designed for a narrow wavelength range, multiple wavelengths or other specific optical functions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two lenses with identical mechanical dimensions can therefore have completely different optical properties depending on their material and coating.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:45px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-vertically-aligned-center is-image-fill-element\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 45%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Laser Optics at High Power<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As laser power increases, the demands placed on the optics also increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If an optical component absorbs even a very small proportion of the laser energy, the absolute amount of absorbed energy can still become significant at high power levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heating can cause temperature gradients within the component and alter its optical properties. This can contribute to <strong>thermal lensing<\/strong>, where temperature changes affect how the laser beam is refracted and consequently shift or distort the focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a high-power laser system, factors such as the following therefore become particularly important:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>very low absorption<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>high optical quality<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>correct coating<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>effective cooling where required<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>clean optical surfaces<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>regular inspection of protective windows<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>stable temperature and process environment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The higher the laser power, the more important it becomes to maintain control over the entire optical chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Contamination \u2013 a Small Problem with Potentially Major Consequences<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cleanliness is critical to the performance of laser optics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dust, smoke, metal particles or other contaminants on an optical surface can absorb laser energy. This can cause local heating and, in some cases, damage both the coating and the optical material itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem can then accelerate.
