SCANLAB intelliSCAN III 20
SCANLAB intelliSCAN III 20 is a high-performance two-axis galvanometer-based scanner system with a 20 mm aperture, designed for applications requiring high dynamics, precision and stable beam positioning.
The scanner can be configured for several common laser wavelengths and is suitable for applications including laser marking, micromachining, laser welding, drilling and processing-on-the-fly.
LMI AB has extensive experience with SCANLAB scanner technology and uses the intelliSCAN III 20 in various industrial laser systems and customised solutions.
Fast and precise beam positioning
The intelliSCAN III 20 uses two galvanometer-driven mirrors to control the laser beam in the X and Y directions. The low moving mass enables extremely fast beam positioning with high repeatability, without mechanically moving the laser head or workpiece.
This makes the scanner particularly suitable for laser processes where high processing speeds need to be combined with precise and repeatable beam control.
Applications
The SCANLAB intelliSCAN III series is designed for a wide range of industrial laser processes. Typical applications for the intelliSCAN III 20 include:
- laser marking
- laser engraving
- micromachining
- fine and precision welding
- drilling
- processing-on-the-fly
- other applications requiring fast and precise beam positioning
The appropriate configuration depends on factors including laser wavelength, power, beam diameter, required working field and the specific laser process.
20 mm aperture
The intelliSCAN III 20 has a 20 mm aperture. The aperture is an important parameter when dimensioning the complete optical system, as it influences the beam diameter that can be handled by the scanner.
The scanner, galvo mirrors and focusing optics therefore need to be dimensioned together to achieve the required working field, spot size and process result.
F-theta optics and working field
The intelliSCAN III 20 can be combined with different focusing solutions depending on the application. In a conventional two-dimensional scanner system, F-theta optics are normally used to focus the laser beam across a defined working field.
The choice of focal length affects factors including working field, working distance, focused spot size and power density. The scanner and focusing optics should therefore always be considered as parts of the same optical system.
2D and 3D applications
As standard, the intelliSCAN III 20 is used for rapid beam control in the X and Y directions. For applications where the focal position also needs to be adjusted in the Z direction, the scanner can be combined with dynamic focusing.
SCANLAB specifies, among other options, the possibility of combining the intelliSCAN III 20 with varioSCAN II for 3D applications. This enables processing across larger working areas, components with variations in height and three-dimensional geometries.
Control and system integration
The intelliSCAN III 20 is designed for integration into industrial laser systems and supports interfaces including SL2-100 and XY2-100 Enhanced.
The scanner can be integrated with SCANLAB RTC control boards and combined with the laser source, optics and machine control to create a complete laser processing system.
Depending on the application, system integration may also include laser triggering, digital I/O, encoder signals, processing-on-the-fly, vision systems, robotics and other automation.

Laser power and optical configuration
SCANLAB specifies up to 1,000 W at 1064 nm and 100% duty cycle with air cooling for the standard configuration of the intelliSCAN III 20.
This should not be interpreted as meaning that every configuration of the intelliSCAN III 20 can generally be used for laser processes up to 1,000 W. Permissible laser power and suitability depend on factors including laser wavelength, beam diameter, galvo mirrors, mirror substrate, optical coating, cooling and the specific process.
LMI AB can therefore assist in specifying the scanner and its optical configuration for the particular laser source and application.
Galvo mirrors and coatings
The intelliSCAN III 20 can be configured for different laser wavelengths and applications. The substrate and optical coating of the galvo mirrors must be selected according to the laser wavelength and power load.
When ordering a new scanner or replacing an existing unit, it is therefore important to identify the complete configuration rather than relying solely on the intelliSCAN III 20 model designation.
Replacing an existing intelliSCAN III 20
Different versions of the intelliSCAN III 20 may differ despite sharing the same basic model designation. Differences may include mechanical configuration, connector position, galvo mirrors, mirror substrate, optical coating, cooling, interface and optical configuration.
When replacing an existing scanner, we therefore recommend checking the part number, serial number and complete configuration.
Photographs of the scanner and its identification plate, together with information about the laser source and application, can help identify the correct version. LMI AB can assist in identifying the existing configuration and specifying a suitable replacement.
