RexWeld Laser Welding Robot Cell

RexWeld is a fully integrated robotic laser welding cell designed for automated welding with high precision, stable process control, and integrated laser safety.

RexWeld – robotic laser welding system

RexWeld is an advanced laser welding cell developed by Laser Machining Inc. AB in Nås, Sweden, in collaboration with JE RobotTeknik och Automation AB in Gnosjö. The system is designed for automated laser welding applications where high precision, repeatability, and stable operation are required.

The welding cell is equipped with an IPG YLS-3000-U fiber laser generating a concentrated laser beam with a wavelength of 1070 nm. When focused through the optical system, the beam achieves extremely high power density, allowing it to melt, vaporise, or thermally modify materials depending on the process parameters.

The welding process is controlled through an ABB robot control system, supplied by JE RobotTeknik AB, ensuring precise control of motion, process parameters, and the laser system.

Integrated laser safety

The RexWeld cell is designed to comply with Class 1 laser safety requirements.

The cell’s roof and walls are double-layered and monitored by the KUKA LaserSpy radiation monitoring system. LaserSpy continuously monitors the enclosure and immediately triggers the emergency stop circuit if any laser radiation passes the first protective layer.

In such an event, all movements and laser emissions are instantly stopped to maintain a safe working environment.

Robot control and positioning

The RexWeld system uses an ABB robot control platform to position the laser focusing unit together with a custom-built two-axis positioner inside the cell.

An integrated vision system in the focusing unit enables precise alignment and positioning of weld seams, ensuring accurate and repeatable welding.

The front door of the robot cell opens and closes automatically during loading and unloading of parts. The door is equipped with a large display for process monitoring, allowing operators to supervise the welding process.

Operator interface and process control

The ABB robot system functions as the main control system, managing

  • the vision system

  • robot motion and positioning

  • the laser source

  • safety interlocks

Operators control the process through a custom HMI (Human-Machine Interface) on a side-mounted touchscreen.

From this interface it is possible to adjust all relevant welding parameters, including:

  • laser power settings

  • ramp-up and ramp-down control

  • signal timing and process settings

The interface also includes modules for order handling and production counting.

Shielding gas

During welding, argon or nitrogen shielding gas is used and monitored by the control system to ensure stable welding quality.
