TYKMA Electrox EMS400 – Laser Marking with Programmable XY Table
TYKMA Electrox EMS400 is a powerful floor-standing laser marking workstation for large components, large fixtures and batch production. The programmable XY table provides a total working area of 610 × 610 mm and enables automatic movement between multiple marking positions while maintaining precision and fine detail.
Laser Marking with a Programmable XY Table
EMS400 is designed for industrial applications where a standard optical marking field is not sufficient.
The system uses a motorised and programmable XY table to move the component between different marking positions.
This provides a total working area of 610 × 610 mm, while standard optics can still be used for the actual laser marking process.
This makes EMS400 particularly attractive when large components need to be marked at several different positions or when multiple smaller components are placed in a larger fixture.
610 × 610 mm Working Area
The programmable XY table enables EMS400 to process a total area of 610 × 610 mm.
Instead of attempting to create a single very large optical marking field, the component is moved in a controlled manner between different positions.
This allows smaller optics to be used even when markings are distributed across a significantly larger area.
This is particularly valuable when the application requires fine detail or small machine-readable codes at multiple positions across a large component or fixture.
Ideal for Large Fixtures and Batch Production
EMS400 is particularly well suited to marking trays and fixtures containing multiple components.
Several parts can be positioned within the same fixture and the XY table programmed to automatically move each component into the correct marking position.
This reduces the need for manual component handling between individual marking cycles.
For repetitive series production, this can create an efficient workflow where the operator loads a complete fixture and the system then processes the components automatically.
Marking Multiple Positions on the Same Component
The XY table is also a major advantage when a larger component needs to be marked in several different locations.
The system can automatically position the component beneath the laser and apply different markings at each position.
For example, a serial number can be marked at one position, a Data Matrix code at another, and product information or a logo on another area of the component.
All movements can be integrated into the same marking program, providing a repeatable and automated process.
Tiling for Larger Marking Designs
EMS400 can also use its XY movements to divide larger graphical designs into several smaller marking fields.
This technique is commonly known as tiling.
The system marks one section of the design, repositions the component and then continues with the next section.
This makes it possible to create a graphical marking across an area larger than the individual optical marking field.
Whether a large optical marking field or XY positioning is the better solution depends on the application’s requirements for size, detail, precision and cycle time.
Programmable Z-Axis for Automatic Focusing
EMS400 also features programmable focus height adjustment.EMS400 also features programmable focus height adjustment.
The Z-axis positions the laser head at the correct working height and can be controlled through the system software.
This simplifies product changeovers between components of different heights and reduces the need for manual adjustment.
The combination of programmable X, Y and Z movements makes EMS400 a highly flexible platform for advanced marking applications.
Automatic pneumatic door
EMS400 is equipped with a vertically opening pneumatic door with an integrated safety system.
The door design provides excellent access to the large working area during loading and unloading.
The system can also be used in an automatic operating mode where the marking cycle begins when the door closes.
This reduces manual operations and contributes to an efficient workflow during repetitive production.
Multiple Laser Technologies for Different Materials
TYKMA’s current EMS400 platform can be configured with several different laser technologies.
The manufacturer specifies 20–100 W MOPA fibre laser, 10 W UV laser and 60–100 W CO₂ laser as available options.
This makes EMS400 suitable for a much wider range of materials and applications than a workstation restricted to a single laser technology.
MOPA fibre laser technology is a common choice for metals and many engineering plastics, while UV and CO₂ provide additional possibilities for materials requiring different wavelengths.
LMI helps you select the right laser technology, power and optics based on the material, component and production requirements.
What Can Be Marked with EMS400?
The range of materials depends on the laser source installed in the system.
With the appropriate configuration, EMS400 can be used for materials including:
- Stainless steel
- Steel
- Aluminium and anodised aluminium
- Titanium
- Brass and other metals
- Carbide
- Many engineering plastics
- Painted and coated components
- Additional materials with a suitable UV or CO₂ laser
The exact marking result depends on the material properties, selected laser technology, optics and programmed laser parameters.
Typical Applications
EMS400 is particularly well suited to applications where a large working area and automated positioning are important, including:
- Large machine and industrial components
- Large fixtures containing multiple components
- Batch marking
- Marking Multiple Positions on the Same Component
- Serial numbers and part numbers
- Data Matrix codes and QR codes
- Barcodes
- Logos and graphical symbols
- Scales and graduations
- Product and manufacturing information
- Automotive components
- UID and traceability marking
- Larger graphical markings using tiling
Laser marking provides a permanent mark and normally requires no consumables such as inks, labels or chemicals.
Rotary Axis for Cylindrical Components
EMS400 can be equipped with a rotary unit for marking cylindrical components.
The rotary axis can be used together with the XY table and enables marking around the circumference of a component.
The system can therefore combine linear X, Y and Z movements with rotation.
This provides up to four programmable motion axes and makes EMS400 particularly flexible for components with more complex geometries.
Option for Long and Large Components
EMS400 features removable side panels, allowing components whose length or geometry prevents them from fitting inside the normally enclosed workstation to be accommodated.
For specific applications, Class 4 operation with a safety override is also available.
This can be useful when very large or long components need to be marked.
Class 4 laser operation requires specific safety measures, a proper risk assessment and appropriate protective equipment. LMI can provide advice on laser safety and the appropriate system solution when required.
Integrated PC and operator interface
EMS400 is equipped with an integrated PC as well as a monitor, keyboard and mouse mounted on an adjustable ergonomic arm.
The operator can create, edit and select marking programs directly at the machine.
The software controls both the laser marking information and the system’s programmable movements.
This makes it possible to create complete operating sequences where positioning and marking are performed automatically.

EMS400 or Zetalase XLT?
This is an important distinction between two systems that may initially appear quite similar.
Both EMS400 and Zetalase XLT can work across an area of 610 × 610 mm, but they achieve this in completely different ways.
EMS400 uses a motorised XY table that physically positions the component between different marking fields. This is particularly attractive when fine detail is required across a large area, when multiple components are placed in a fixture or when several separate positions on a large component need to be marked.
Zetalase XLT, on the other hand, uses a specially developed optical system to create a continuous 610 × 610 mm marking field without a conventional XY table.
XLT is therefore particularly attractive for large continuous graphical designs, while EMS400 provides extensive possibilities for programmable component positioning and multi-axis processing.
LMI can help determine which principle will provide the best marking result and cycle time for your application.
When Is an XY System the Right Solution?
A large XY system is particularly useful when the component or fixture is significantly larger than the optical marking field required for the actual marking.
By combining a smaller optical marking field with programmable positioning, fine detail can be maintained while processing a much larger total working area.
It is also an efficient solution when multiple components need to be marked within the same fixture or when several separate marking positions are required on the same product.
LMI can analyse component geometry, marking field, optics, positioning requirements and cycle time to determine the most suitable system solution.
