Laser Castle

Laser Castle – modular laser safety enclosure for high-power lasers

Laser Castle® from Lasermet is a modular, panel-based laser safety enclosure designed for industrial high-power laser applications. The enclosure creates a Class 1 environment around the laser process by containing the hazardous laser radiation within specially designed wall and roof panels.

Laser Castle is designed for Class 4 lasers and can be configured according to both the laser process and the production environment. The system is suitable for applications such as robotic laser welding and other automated laser processes where a permanent or semi-permanent protected working area is required.

Modular construction

Laser Castle is constructed from interconnected laser-blocking panels. The enclosure can be supplied with or without a roof depending on the application and safety requirements.

The modular design allows the size and layout of the enclosure to be adapted to the installation. The use of standard panels also makes it possible to modify the cell at a later stage, increase or reduce its size, or relocate it to another position.

  • Modular panel construction
  • Class 1 enclosure for Class 4 lasers
  • Available with or without a roof
  • Adaptable size and layout
  • Can be dismantled, relocated and reassembled

For high-power lasers

Laser Castle is designed for industrial high-power laser applications. Lasermet gives robotic laser welding with a 4 kW laser as one example, while systems can also be configured for higher laser powers such as 10 kW and 20 kW.

The required enclosure design and protection level must always be determined according to the specific laser, process and installation.

Doors and access

Laser Castle can be equipped with different types of doors to combine safe access with the requirements of the production process.

Available solutions include:

  • Personnel doors
  • Sliding doors
  • Double doors
  • Roller shutter doors
  • Vertically opening guillotine doors

The doors are manufactured using laser-blocking panels and can be integrated with the enclosure’s safety and interlock system.

Laser safety windows

For processes where operators need to observe the work inside the enclosure, Laser Castle can be equipped with laser safety windows installed in walls or doors.

Options include both passive laser-blocking filter windows and active interlock-monitored windows.

Interlock and warning systems

Laser Castle can be integrated with Lasermet’s Laser Interlock® System. The system can include an interlock controller, safety switches, electromagnetic door locks and LED warning signs.

Illuminated warning signs above access doors can indicate the status of the laser installation and show when the laser is active or when no laser hazard is present.

Lighting, CCTV and extraction

Laser Castle can be equipped with additional functions depending on the laser process and production environment.

  • Integrated electrical installation
  • Internal lighting
  • HD CCTV system for process monitoring
  • Connections for fume and process extraction
  • Custom openings and service penetrations
  • Solutions for rotary tables and other automation equipment

For enclosures fitted with a roof, internal lighting is recommended to provide a suitable working and service environment inside the cell.

Passive or active laser safety enclosure

In its standard configuration, Laser Castle is a passive laser safety enclosure in which the panels absorb the laser energy. For applications requiring additional protection and monitoring, the enclosure can be upgraded with Lasermet’s Laser Jailer® Active Laser Guarding System.

Laser Jailer uses active detector panels installed on the inside of the enclosure to detect when a high-power laser beam strikes the protective wall. When a laser strike is detected, the safety system isolates the laser safety input in less than 50 ms.

PEL values for Laser Castle panels

Panel thickness Exposed area PEL (T3) 10 s PEL (T2) 100 s
50 mm 4 mm² 150 MW/m² 87 MW/m²
50 mm 2000 mm² 3.1 MW/m² 1.7 MW/m²
100 mm 4 mm² 310 MW/m² 170 MW/m²
100 mm 2000 mm² 5.1 MW/m² 3.0 MW/m²

Standards and safety

Laser Castle is tested and certified according to EN IEC 60825-4 – Safety of Laser Products, Part 4: Laser Guards. The system is designed to create a safe and controlled environment around industrial laser processes.

To meet the applicable requirements of IEC 60825-1, the enclosure can be combined with an appropriate Laser Interlock® Control System and the required warning systems.

For industrial laser installations

Laser Castle is particularly suitable for larger and more permanent laser installations where a robust but modular enclosure is required.

Typical applications include:

  • Robotic laser welding
  • Automated laser processes
  • High-power laser applications
  • Research and development environments
  • Production cells incorporating robots and automation
